Mixbook Redefines Photo Calendar Creation

The Only Collaborative Photo Book Creation Solution Brings Ease of Use, Creativity to the Tired, Traditional Calendar Space

SAN JOSE, CA–(Marketwire – October 28, 2010) –  Mixbook, the free online photo service that offers the most customizable photo books and photo cards on the planet, today announced that it is redefining the photo calendar marketplace by offering the first fully customizable, collaborative calendar builder, bringing unlimited creativity and flexibility to what has traditionally been a very structured, frustrating yearly photo project.

“In 2010, people are no longer happy to accept static, restrictive designs and layouts. They want to build calendars that not only reflect their personalities, but are specifically geared towards the dates they care most about,” said Andrew Laffoon, CEO and co-founder, Mixbook. “With our new calendars, we’ve taken the unlimited creative flexibility and social collaboration features of Mixbook and applied them to one of the most popular holiday gifts. People can now build their calendars with their families, friends and co-workers, and can easily access the photos they most want, no matter who took them. We look forward to seeing how the content and format of calendars will change this holiday season as our customers usher in a new era of ‘social calendaring.'”

As with Mixbook’s comprehensive line of photo books and cards, Mixbook’s new photo calendars are completely customizable, and they enable social calendar creation through Mixbook’s unique collaboration features, letting users pool together their photos and build calendars that capture the essence of their family or organization. In addition, because of the speed and simplicity of the proven Mixbook Editor, calendar makers no longer have to worry about losing their work while in process or having difficulty creating projects that fit their specific needs — or even the orientation of their photos — as is often experienced with other calendar solutions.

Mixbook calendars are currently available in two sizes, 12″x12″and 11″x8.5.” Mixbook calendar creators can:

  • Add photos from a number of photo sharing sites including Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, and Smugmug;
  • Feature your own special days such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and vacations right in your calendar, even including a picture, stickers, or a caption on the actual date on the calendar;
  • Add and remove holidays as you wish;
  • Use different backgrounds on each page, both for the featured picture page and behind the calendar dates themselves; and
  • Enjoy a constantly growing list of themes, including related “sticker” elements to further personalize your calendars.

Mixbook Photo Calendars Are Here!

Hey Mixbookers!

We’re so proud to introduce Mixbook photo calendars!  Just like our photo books and cards, you can use the Mixbook Editor to create beautiful, fully- customizable photo calendars with your favorite photos and stickers.   You can choose from many new themes, and make your calendar either an 11×8.5 landscape or a 12×12 square.

One of our coolest features is the ability to add photos to specific dates on the calendar grid.  Use a pretty picture of mom on her birthday or a photo of the blushing bride on the date of an impending wedding.  Why stop there!  Select “Manage Events” from the top right corner of the Mixbook Editor to pick and choose which holidays you want to include in your photo calendar, and put in your own events like a long-awaited family vacation or a wedding anniversary.

You can also customize the calendar grid pages.  Stickers and photos can be in front of or behind the grid itself.  Make them slightly transparent for a neat watermark effect.  Change up the background of the grid pages to give your months more flair.

These are just some of the cool things you can do to personalize  your photo calendars.  Once you get started, we know you’ll love them as much as we do! Happy Mixbooking!

Hot Wedding Trend: Handmade Centerpieces

One of the hottest wedding trends right now is adding a special personal touch to reception décor.  That’s why the Mixbook team has thought up a few easy DIY ideas for charming handmade centerpieces that your guests will adore.  Keep reading below to find out how you can win a 40% off coupon for your next Mixbook photo book!

Photo Trees

All you need to make lovely photo trees is a bunch of sticks from your backyard, your favorite photos, and some crafting items like ribbons, cloth flowers, beads, glitter, glue, and paint.  The basic idea is to attach photos to the branches and then add embellishments that match your wedding theme.  For a weeping willow look, attach a piece of ribbon to your photos and then tie the other end to the branches.  If you’re using tea light candles on your tables, be sure to place them far enough away from the dangling photographs!

You can also glue your photos to the top of the branches to make your centerpiece really look like a tree.  The extra space between photographs can be filled in with small cloth flowers, bows, beads, or anything else you desire to give your photo sculpture the perfect look.

Photo Book Stacks

A centerpiece idea that will give your guests something to talk about is a dressed-up stack of photo books.  Use Mixbook to make any number of books of your favorite moments, and then pretty them up by piling them on a piece of mirror and scattering candles and flower petals on the table.  The great thing about this centerpiece is that you can plan which books to display based on who is sitting at each table.   Add an interesting twist by creating photo books with wedding guest book pages so that your guests can jot down their favorite memories!

Photo Vases

These centerpieces are easy to transport and can be assembled very quickly on site at your wedding reception venue.  All you have to do it group together 4-5 clear glass vases of different shapes and sizes at the center of each table, and then put some river stones or colored-glass pebbles at the bottom of each vase.  Insert a favorite photo, your wedding invitations, or other items that are special to you and in a few minutes, you have elegant centerpieces that won’t take up much of your decoration budget.  Set a few lit candles near your photo vases for a soft, flickering light.  Voila!

MIXBOOK WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Do you have any fabulous creative ideas for wedding centerpieces?  Share them below in the comments section for a chance to win a 40% off coupon for your next Mixbook project.  Check back next week on our Facebook page to see if you’ve won!

Previously, card and stationery design choices were limited to boring pre-made templates. “We were shocked that nobody else had created a service like this,” said Andrew Laffoon, CEO & Co-founder of Mixbook. “All of the other players force users into strict templates that stifle creativity. At Mixbook, users have unlimited freedom to personalize their cards.”

Mixbook customers love the new cards and stationery line, with over 90% of customers actively recommending Mixbook cards to family and friends.

“I loved how flexible the design system was and how unique I was able to make my cards. This was a far better system than I’ve used before on other sites like Shutterfly and Snapfish!” said Sarah Johnson, who ordered thank you cards for wedding guests on Mixbook.

3 Great Ideas for a Staycation

Traveling is a favorite hobby of the Mixbook team. We often talk about going to exotic locations all over the world, but we’ve found that short weekend trips can be just as fun!  If you’re feeling the need to get away but are short on time and money, consider the weekend escapes below:

1. National Parks

From quiet, mysterious deserts to soaring mountain ranges, there is so much nature to explore.  Check out the National Park Service website (www.nps.gov) to find national parks in your state and start planning an adventure.  Parks are great for day trips with friends or family, and the cost of admission is usually free.  If you’re feeling the itch to play outside, tie on your walking shoes and grab your camera.  You will definitely want to capture the stunning views, and Mixbook has a great outdoors theme for your photo book!

Hiking Photo Book

2. Local Sites

If you’re more urban-inclined, try spending the weekend in a local city and spend some time sightseeing.  You can stick to your budget by taking public transportation and checking deal sites for discount rates on hotel rooms and gourmet restaurants.  Embrace your inner tourist and immerse yourself in the city.  Don’t forget to snap some pictures for your friends!

3. Festivals

If you’ve had a crazy week and want to take it easy on the weekend, consider going to a local festival.  You get to spend time outside, slowly perusing stalls of goods and munching on delicious festival food while people-watching.  Take plenty of pictures for your summer photo book, and be sure to carry a little cash so if you find something you’d like to purchase, you don’t have to go out of your way to find an ATM.

Don’t Forget to Capture Your Memories!

Even though you may not have traveled far, include your weekend memories in a special Mixbook photo book to share with friends and family.  There are so many fun themes available that you’re sure to find that perfect design.  If you need some inspiration, check out these great examples from your fellow Mixbook users!
